So you've decided that you're done feeling sick and tired and you want to commit to a healthier lifestyle. But where do you begin? And most importantly, how in the world do you stick with this goal and not give up, like all the other times before?
Everyone wants to be healthy - but maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be tough.
I hear ya.
That's why I've outlined five tips that will help you commit to a healthy lifestyle.
Before you set off on this journey of healthy living, take a few minutes to read through each tip and give each one some thought.
From choosing your why to setting a plan... I know these tips will help you succeed in your journey towards better health. These tips have helped me in the past six years of my journey - and now I hope they help you too!
1. KNOW YOUR WHY.
Knowing the reason or reasons why you want to make these changes to your life, will be one of the most powerful drivers to keeping you on your path.
Your why will remind you of why you started in the first place. It will motivate you. It will keep you going when you want to quit.
Take some time to identify your WHY.
Is it because you're tired of feeling sick? Is it for your kids? Is it because you envision yourself being an energetic grandmother one day chasing around her beautiful grandkids? Your why will keep you going.
2. HAVE A PLAN.
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Any goal in life needs a plan. A plan will help you make the changes easier to handle. It will serve as your road map during this transition.
Are you going to meal prep on Sundays or will you be cooking from scratch each day? When are you going to grocery shop? Are you going to throw out junk food in the home? None of these have wrong answers, but KNOWING the answers ahead of time will make it easier for you in the moment to keep you from reverting to old habits.
3. COMMIT TO SMALL CHANGES.
Many times we get so excited for making a big lifestyle change that we want to do it all at once. I've been there, done that. But the problem with this mentality is that, this is a difficult thing to do especially when you've been living a certain way for years and years.
Some people CAN totally get rid of all junk food, toxins, and unhealthy habits in one fell sweep but for the majority of us, small changes that keep us moving towards our BIG goal of a healthy life is the way to go.
Don't get burnt out.
Don't get overwhelmed.
Work on improving one small thing each week or each month and by the end of the year the changes will be drastic!
4. SETBACKS ARE EXPECTED.
Setbacks happen. Unforeseen circumstances occur. You might experience an illness that keeps you from working out for a week, or from meal prepping properly. You might have a big project at work that keeps you working late and leaves no time for grocery shopping. The kids might have a show at school.
The list of things that can suddenly pop up are endless – it's called life. Setbacks happen. Learn to expect them. Learn from them. Then pick yourself back up and keep on moving forward. It doesn't mean you're a failure. It doesn't mean you can't “do this”. It just means you're human.
5. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
This is the most important one of them all. Believe that you can make these changes for a better healthier life.
You can eat healthy foods.
You can put down the soda.
You can stop eating chips and candy.
You can commit to some sort of daily movement.
You can be more present.
YOU CAN.
What you believe, you can achieve. Quiet down that doubtful voice in your head that tells you, you cannot do something. You are capable of making these changes if you really want to. You are not any less special than the next person who has done it.
Stop using that negative self-talk as an excuse.
I believe in you. Do you?
