Let's talk about Maca...
Wait, what is Maca?
Maca is a magical root vegetable that only grows in the highest of altitudes, usually in the Andes of Peru. Just this fact alone, makes this veg a very interesting one.
Okayyy, it's not technically magical but it is a powerful adaptogen that has many beneficial qualities that even the ancient incan warriors knew about!
ancient incan warriors consumed maca
Story says that the ancient Incan Warriors use to consume tonsss of maca in preparation for battle to increase their stamina and energy levels. Ugh, yesss gimme some of that please!
But that's not all maca can do...
It may also do the following:
- Reduce fatigue
- Improve libido 😉
- Balance your hormones
- Regulate stress in your body (stress is like, a real thing, ya know?)
Add Maca powder to your smoothies and pancakes
So how does one consume maca?
I personally have never seen the actual root vegetable sold in stores down here in South Florida. The most common form of Maca is in powder form.
It's also wayyy easier to consume it in powder form because you can easily throw in 1 to 2 teaspoons of maca powder in your favorite smoothies, shakes, pancakes, energy bars... the opportunities are endless really.
malty, earthy, and kinda sweet flavor
The flavor of maca powder is more of an experience. You can't really adequately describe it in words, it must be felt.
Okay I'm being a bit over the top here but in all seriousness.. Maca's taste is unique and I might go as far as saying it might be an 'acquired' taste.
What I mean by acquired is that ... you might not like it the first few times but once you build a relationship with it, and start to see the benefits, you begin to-kinda-like the taste, sometimes even crave it.
My best suggestion is to try different types and brands of maca powder until you find the one that suits your tastebuds. I've tried several different brands, and the flavor can vary from super intense to mild and delicious. In other words, don't give up on maca just because you had ONE bad experience with the flavor.
Ps. If you ultimately just simply hate the taste of maca, try mixing it up in a smoothie. 9 times out of 10 you won't even be able to taste the fact that there's maca in there.
Check out our Maca-Infused Mango Pineapple Sunshine Smoothie - this is a great way to enjoy all the great benefits of maca while while hiding it's earthy flavor if it's too strong for your personal preference.
Where can I buy maca powder?
Maca has gained a ton of popularity over the past few years so it should not be too hard for you to find some maca powder near you. You can check your local natural food stores and Whole Foods. Of course you can always find it online as well. Amazon has a ton of different brands of maca available for purchase.
Lately we've been hooked on Earth Circle Organics Raw Organic Maca Powder (affiliate link), and we buy that one off of Amazon for convenience.
Why we're loving this brand...
It's raw. It's organic. And it's high quality. Three very important features you always want to strive for when buying basically anything that you're going to be ingesting or consuming. Always do some research on the brand and the company and the product.
The price and taste are also winners in my book - the price is right for the quality of ingredients (under $15 on Amazon at the time of this post) and the taste is one of the best I've experienced. See, there I go again with the 'experience' in regards to taste. Ha.
Please note we are not sponsored by this brand. We're just sharing our experience and it happens to be a positive one so why not share the love with our community and help YOU make a better choice. It's a win-win!
Okay friends, that's all I've got to say about Maca for now. It's a lovely treat that has become a favorite staple at our home. I hope this information helps you make a more informed decision about maca.
Let us know below in the comments if you're a maca fan as well, or if you're just too turned off by its flavor. I'd love to hear some ways YOU mix maca in with your daily routine.
